WordPress developer in Hertfordshire

Hand-built WordPress themes, WooCommerce, speed fixes and plugin development from a St Albans team, at £50 an hour + VAT.

If you need a WordPress developer in Hertfordshire, WE-DEV can help with anything from a single bug fix to a completely custom theme. We are a St Albans team that has built WordPress sites for years, and we do it the old-fashioned way: hand-coded classic themes, no page builders, and clean code you own. WordPress development costs £50 an hour + VAT, with volume discounts of up to 25 %, and the hours you buy never expire.

What we do with WordPress

Custom theme development

We design and build bespoke WordPress themes from scratch. Each template is coded by hand with semantic HTML, a small amount of CSS and only the JavaScript it needs. Content is edited in the standard WordPress block editor, with custom blocks and patterns where they make life easier for your team. We aim for 95+ in Google Lighthouse on every template and build to WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility. Read why in why we build business websites on WordPress without page builders.

WooCommerce

We set up and extend WooCommerce shops for UK businesses: Stripe payments, UK VAT, shipping zones, click-and-collect, product options, deposits and subscriptions. We also write custom WooCommerce extensions when a plugin does not quite fit. See e-commerce development and our guide to WooCommerce for UK shops.

Plugin development and integrations

When you need WordPress to do something unusual, we write a small, focused plugin rather than bending three general ones together. Common examples are booking and deposit systems, member areas, custom post types for listings or case studies, and integrations with CRMs, accounting software and payment providers through their APIs. See API development and integration.

Speed and Core Web Vitals

A slow WordPress site is usually caused by a heavy theme, a page builder, too many plugins, unoptimised images or poor hosting. We audit the site, measure it properly and fix the causes rather than adding another caching plugin. Our guide to speeding up WordPress lists the fixes we use most often.

Rescues, updates and security

If your developer has disappeared, the site has been hacked, updates keep breaking things or you cannot log in, we can help. We start with a review of the code, plugins, hosting and backups, tell you plainly what we find and agree a plan. We can also put the site behind Cloudflare, add a firewall and login protection, and set up proper backups. See cybersecurity services.

Maintenance

After launch, many clients keep a balance of prepaid hours for WordPress and plugin updates, small changes and new pages. Because hours never expire, you never pay for a month in which nothing happened. Read what a WordPress maintenance plan should include before you sign up for one anywhere.

Why no page builders?

Page builders make it easy to drag a layout together, but they add a lot of code to every page, tie your content to one plugin and make the site harder to keep fast. When the builder changes or is abandoned, moving away is expensive. A hand-built theme uses the editor that ships with WordPress, loads far less code and can be maintained by any competent WordPress developer, not only us. The site is faster, and you are not tied to us or to a plugin vendor.

Who we work with in Hertfordshire

  • Businesses whose current WordPress site is slow, hard to edit or built on an abandoned theme.
  • Agencies and freelancers in the county who need extra WordPress capacity. We also offer white-label development.
  • Shops on WooCommerce that need custom features, better checkout or a tidy-up after years of plugins.
  • Clinics, salons and studios that need online bookings with deposits. We built the WordPress site for Hypnotic Art, with bookings that take a deposit, and the WordPress site that sits alongside the Flutter app for Tattoo-Art & Obsession.
  • Organisations that need accessible WordPress sites built to WCAG 2.2 AA.

How a WordPress job runs

  1. Brief. Send us the site address and what you want changed. For anything beyond a small fix, we arrange a short call or a meeting in St Albans or at your premises.
  2. Estimate. We tell you how many hours we expect it to take before you buy.
  3. Work on staging. Changes are made on a copy of your site, never straight on the live one, unless it is an emergency fix.
  4. Review and deploy. You check the staging site, we deploy and confirm everything works on the live site.
  5. Timesheet. Time is logged in 15-minute increments and shared with you, so you see exactly where your hours went.

Local and easy to reach

We are based at 17 Orient Close, St Albans. We meet WordPress clients in St Albans, Watford, Hatfield, Harpenden, Hemel Hempstead, Welwyn Garden City, Stevenage and Hertford, and work remotely with clients across the UK. If you are planning a full redesign rather than WordPress development work, see web design in Hertfordshire. If you are weighing up a headless set-up, read headless vs classic WordPress first.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a WordPress developer cost in Hertfordshire?

Our WordPress development rate is £50 an hour + VAT, with discounts from 5 % for 10 hours to 25 % for 100 hours. WooCommerce work is £65 an hour + VAT.

Can you fix a WordPress site built by someone else?

Yes. We review the theme, plugins, hosting and backups first, then explain what needs fixing and how long it will take. Work is done on a staging copy where possible.

Do you use Elementor, Divi or other page builders?

We do not build new sites with page builders. We hand-code classic themes that use the standard WordPress editor. We can maintain an existing builder site or help you move away from one.

Do my prepaid hours expire?

No. Hours never expire, so you can use them for updates and small changes whenever you need them.

Can you make my WordPress site faster?

Usually, yes. We measure the site, find the real causes of slowness, such as heavy themes, builders, plugins, images or hosting, and fix them. We aim for 95+ in Lighthouse on the templates we build.
